With an illustrious 30-year history and an extensive repertoire Merton Concert Band specialises in big band favourites, show music and light classics.
The band's universal appeal has cultivated a loyal following of regular listeners, young and old.
Based in Wimbledon and formed in 1981, Merton Concert Band was the brainchild of a former mayor of the London Borough of Merton. The band had strong links with the famous Mantovani Orchestra through its star trumpeter, Stan Newsome, who was the founder conductor of the band. Stan died in 1989, but the band still embraces his philosophy that the audience should be entertained, not educated.
In 2005 the band was lucky to obtain the services of another notable trumpet player, Martin Bunce, as its principal conductor.
